Climate change ‘will threaten China food security’

China will need an extra 10 million hectares of arable land to feed its people in 2030 because global warming will reduce the country's grain harvest, China Daily reported on Friday, citing a top climate official.

"Global warming may cause the grain harvest to fall by 5% to 10%" by 2030, Zheng Guoguang, the head of the State Meteorological Administration, was quoted as saying.

The country would need to produce an additional 100 million tonnes of food to feed its growing population, the report said.
