Beijing hails cleaner air during car restrictions

Air pollution increased in Beijing on Tuesday, reflecting the success of an Olympic pollution prevention test the day before, which took over 1 million cars off the roads, Reuters quoted environment officials as saying.
"The test has clearly demonstrated we are capable of providing good air quality for the Beijing Olympic Games," Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau (BEPB) deputy chief, Du Shaozhong, was quoted as saying.
Official air quality reports over the four days of car restrictions came in at Grade 2 on 1-5 scale, reports said. This worsened to Grade 3 by midday on Tuesday.
