Beijing population exceeds 17 million

The population of the Chinese capital has exceeded 17 million for the first time, China Daily reported on Tuesday, 1 million away from the upper limit its government set for 2020.

The figure breaks down into 12.04 million holders of Beijing household registration certificates, and 5.1 million "floating population", the
report said.

"Overpopulation is putting considerable pressure on the city’s natural resources and environment," the report added.
