Chinese premier ‘to double disaster relief funds’

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao pledged to almost double disaster relief funds to 11.54 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion), Reuters reported on Wednesday, as the country grapples with a summer of extreme weather.
A series of floods and landslides struck China this summer with 712 people killed and 163 listed missing in July along, the report said. At the same time, other parts of the country endured crippling drought.
Wen presided over a cabinet meeting which decided to boost the central government’s disaster relief funds from 6.7 billion yuan, the report said, citing the central government’s website.
