Algae threatens Beijing reservoir

An algae bloom has appeared in China's Shangzhuang reservoir, northwest of the capital Beijing, threatening local water quality and killing fish, the Beijing Times reported.

This is the worst algae bloom ever recorded in the area, and is the third to be reported in Beijing since July, the report said.

The algae bloom was triggered by continuous high temperatures, heavy rains, increased water pollution from adjacent villages and an increasing number of tourists, the local Water Affairs Bureau said on Monday.
