Shanghai at crisis point as city swelters

The temperature in Shanghai rose to 39.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the equal hottest day in the city for 63 years and the second highest since record-keeping began, the Shanghai Daily reported on Monday.

The city also hit record consumption figures for water and power, noted the report, and experienced a sharp increase in "heat-related ailments and distress."
"Tap-water supply has been reaching our maximum capacity over the past couple of days, and creating records," the Shanghai Daily reported Shen Yiyun, an official with the Shanghai Water Authority, as saying on Sunday.
