Australia to create climate ‘spine’ as part of new green initiative

Australia is to create a 1,740-mile climate ‘spine’ that spans the continent, to allow animals and plants to escape the effects of climate change. Reuters reports that the corridor will link national parks, state forests and government land to help preserve scores of endangered species.

The move is part of a Federal Government initiative on climate change announced yesterday by Australian Prime Minister John Howard which also includes $1000 tax rebates to reduce costs of solar hot water systems and $50,000 ‘green vouchers’ for schools. The Sydney Morning Herald also reported that the Government aimed to begin a national carbon emissions trading scheme in 2011.
