Algae bloom chokes off water supply in east China

Officials promised swift steps on Friday to clean up Taihu Lake, China's third-largest, after a bloom of thick, oily green algae made water undrinkable in the city of Wuxi.
Convoys of trucks have been bringing bottled water for residents, Reuters reported.

A Wuxi official, Zhu Zhongxian, claimed the water was now safe, despite its stench.

"Water quality on every indicator meets national standards and it’s not toxic," the Nanjing Morning Post quoted him as saying.
