Argentina’s port cities succumb to record rains

Questions raised about the pace of climate adaptation in Argentina after catastrophic rains inundate Buenos Aires and other coastal cities
English

The Latin American website Intercambio Climatico reports on recent climate change impacts in Argentina, a key trade partner for China. Thousands have had to be evacuated from their homes in the key coastal city of La Plata and the capital Buenos Aires after torrential rains on April 2, with huge losses of personal property across all social classes.

The immediate costs, according to Intercambio, are 59 people dead and material losses of US$500 million, a demonstration, according to the website, of the impossibility of adapting effectively to the extreme weather that climate change is already causing.

To date, there is no sign of the comprehensive adaptation policies that would be required, or the investment in adaptation that would keep the populations safe.
