Chinese cities to pay for their sewage

China will set up a nationwide system to charge cities for the sewage they produce, said the State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) director Zhou Shengxian on Thursday.
The system will come into effect in 2007 and will charge as much as 0.8 yuan (US $0.10) for every ton of sewage produced. It is hoped that this will ensure the proper treatment of sewage.

Over the next two years this system may also be used to charge cities for the garbage they produce, according to a People's Daily report.
