Environmental situation critical in west China, despite investment

The Chinese government invested more than 200 billion yuan (over US $25 billion) from 2000 to 2005 in improving the environment in the west of the country, but the situation remains critical.
The Chinese State Development and Reform Commission reports that 80% of  soil erosion occurs in the west of the country, covering an area of 3.56 million square km, and over 90% of the China's 2.62 million square km of desert is located in the west.
