Chinese coal producers face fines over pollution

China's State Environmental Protection Administration has published new regulations on controlling environmental damage from the coal industry in Shanxi province, central China, the country's biggest coal producers.

The regulations state that coal producers who cause pollution or otherwise damage the environment may be investigated and prosecuted, and that in the event of a production accident, producers should eliminate or reduce pollution caused, or face fines of up to 300,000 yuan (US$37,500).
